In the year 1999, humanity succeeded in creating what became to be known as “magic,” which was essentially a source of seemingly limitless power. And though mankind had discovered the path leading to true wisdom, it was unable to renounce its foolish and destructive ways. What was intended to help, nurture, and promote world peace was instead corrupted and used for war. It was during this time that the first biological weapons, known as Gears, were created.
Although Gears were originally human, after their transformations they possessed no wills of their own. However, one of these virtual slaves arose with a mind and will of its own. This Gear, known as Justice, took control of her fellow Gears and declared war on all of humanity. It was this action that kicked off what was soon called the Crusades, a century-long war pitting mankind against the weapons they created. It was due to the efforts of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights that the tide of war turned and the Gears were slowly eradicated.
