Background[]
Fievel Mousekewitz is the main hero of the An American Tail series. He is the only son and middle child of Mama and Papa Mousekewitz, with his big sister Tanya and a baby one named Yasha. He is an adventurous mouse who often endangers himself through his reckless but mostly innocent actions. Fievel is seven years old, born in ~1879. When he narrates the start of An American Tail: The Storybook in 1986 he is ~107 years old and speaking to his great-grandchild. He and his family belong to the Ashkenazi subculture (who originally emerged in central and Eastern Europe, but now live across the world, especially in Israel, the United States and Russia, and are named after Ashkenaz, a grandson of Noah's son Japheth who was mentioned in Genesis 10:3, 1st Chronicles 1:6 and Jeremiah 51:27, who was thought to be the ancestor of the Germanic and Slavic peoples and it is for this reason that the term Ashkenazi Jews means "Jews of the land of Ashkenaz"). He is often noted for this, as well as his intelligence. [1]
