Background[]

Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna Holstein-Gottorp-Romanov (also known as simply Anastasia or by her nickname Anya) (born June 18, 1901 in Peterhof Palace, Saint Petersburg, Russian Empire) is the titular character & main protagonist of Don Bluth's 1997 animated film Anastasia. She is based off of the real daughter of Tsar Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra; the youngest sister of Grand Duchesses Olga, Tatiana and Maria; and the older sister of Tsarevich/Grand Duke Alexei. She and her siblings are collectively known as OTMAA. Anastasia was the only member of the Romanov family to survive the assassination. After being separated from her grandmother, Dowager Empress Marie, Anastasia develops amnesia and begins going by "Anya". She then meets and joins two con men named Dimitri and Vladimir, both of which were former servants of the Romanov family, who want to bring her to Paris, France where her grandmother lives, and is longing to see her beloved granddaughter again, so they can take advantage of her and her likeness to collect a reward of 10 million rubles from Marie. Meanwhile, the evil mystic Grigori Rasputin, who had cursed the Romanov family and orchestrated their assassination, is trying to hunt her down to complete his curse.

She sports a strong personality and a detailed appearance. She sports a sharp jawline, long auburn hair and bangs, engaging blue eyes, fair skin, and a natural pink tint to her cheeks. As an orphan, she adorns a greyish-green frock, a button-up yellow dress, black tights, and a pair of brown boots, but her signature and most popular outfit is a sparkling golden dress with her hair in a blue-ribboned ponytail, with a pearled necklace and a matching blue sash around her stomach. Another dress of hers, her coronation dress, is a Russian court dress, a dress of a special regulated style of clothing that aristocrats and courtiers at the Russian imperial court were required to wear, which features a skirt that is gold slashed with pink and has layer after layer of lovely skirts, sleeves that are white on the outside and pink on the inside that are incredibly stylish, cut in intricate ways, and draped long, resembling capes with a pointy tip on the end of each sleeve, and a blue sash which hangs from her right shoulder towards the left side of her stomach. She was a carefree, playful child before Rasputin cursed the Romanov family and overthrew their empire. Years later, she is almost completely clueless of who she really is but she still tries to have fun while finding answers. She is witty when talking to Dimitri and often leaves him speechless.

Anastasia's speaking voice is provided by Meg Ryan, while her singing voice is provided by Liz Callaway. As a child, Kristen Dunst provides her speaking voice, while Lacey Chabert does her singing voice.^[1] Due to Disney buying out most of 21st Century Fox in 2019, Anastasia is part of the Disney Princess group.
